Meaning

Must I say more? Is Your heart stone, iron, a great rock? Are both Your ears dull? Does this suit You? What passion, what anger, and at whom? Is it love for Your two sons? Even so, I will not let go. Wherever I go apart from You, I am lost; if I come close to You, can I come to harm? Whether the fault is mine or Yours, come now and give Your grace.

Explanation

The tenth song is the peak of the plea. 'Must I say more? Is Your heart stone, iron, rock? Are both ears dull? With whom are You angry? Have You forgotten me in love for Your two sons?' The questions come thick and fast.

Yet through them all one resolve rings out: 'Even so, will I let go?' Wherever I go apart from You I am lost; can I come to harm by coming close to You? This is the logic of devotion: there is no other refuge, so there is no letting go.

It ends, 'Whether the fault is mine or Yours, come now with grace.' He stops keeping accounts and asks only for grace.

Periya Puranam, the life of Karaikkal Ammaiyar

The Mother Who Walked to Kailash on Her Head

From the Periya Puranam. In Karaikkal lived a devotee of Shiva named Punithavathi. One day she gave one of two mangoes her husband had sent home to a hungry devotee of Shiva. When her husband asked for the second mango, she prayed and a new fruit appeared in her hand. Seeing this, her husband grew afraid and left her.

Punithavathi prayed to the Lord to take away her beautiful body, and received the form of a gaunt spirit. From then on her whole life belonged to the Lord. When she went to Mount Kailash, she would not tread on the holy mountain with her feet, so she climbed it walking on her head. Uma was amazed and asked about her, and Shiva said, 'She is the mother who cares for us,' and greeted her as 'Ammai', Mother.

When the Lord asked what boon she wanted, she said: 'Undying, joyful love; freedom from birth; if I am born again, never to forget You; and to sit beneath Your feet and sing while You dance.' Tradition says she sits to this day beneath the Lord's dance at Thiruvalangadu. She is the living example of the tenth song's resolve: whatever happens, 'I will not let You go.'
