Periya Puranam, the life of Thirugnanasambandar (Kolaru Pathigam)The Planets Are All Good
From the Periya Puranam. Queen Mangaiyarkkarasiyar of the Pandya kingdom and the minister Kulachchiraiyar invited Thirugnanasambandar to Madurai to protect the Shaiva faith. Sambandar was staying with Appar at Thirumaraikkadu. Appar warned him anxiously: 'The days and planets are not good right now. Your opponents are treacherous, and you are only a boy. Do not go.'
Sambandar smiled: 'We worship the Lord's feet. What can the planets do to His servants?' And he sang the Kolaru Pathigam on the spot: 'The One who shares His body with the bamboo-shouldered Goddess, whose throat holds the poison... the sun, the moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the two serpents: all of them are good, very good, to the Lord's servants.'
Sambandar went to Madurai. His opponents set fire to the monastery where he stayed; through his song the heat turned into a fever that seized the king. Then Sambandar applied sacred ash and cured the king, and the Pandya land returned to the Shaiva faith. When Munusamy sings in the closing verse that the Lord will bring the nine planets under His hand, he is echoing the Kolaru Pathigam.
