Periya Puranam, the life of Sundarar (Thaduththatkonda Puranam)The Lord Who Asked to Be Called 'Madman'
From the Periya Puranam. At Thirunavalur a young man named Nambi Aroorar was about to be married. At the wedding an old Brahmin stepped up and said, 'This young man is my servant; here is the bond his grandfather signed.' In anger Aroorar shouted, 'Are you a madman?' and tore up the palm leaf.
The case went before the assembly at Thiruvennainallur. The original bond was produced and Aroorar lost. The old man led him into the temple and vanished. Only then did Aroorar realise it had been Shiva Himself. He was distraught: 'I insulted You. How can I sing to You now?'
The Lord said, 'You called me a madman. Begin your song with that.' Aroorar began: 'O Madman, wearer of the crescent, great Lord, giver of grace.' He became Sundarar, the Lord's own friend. The Lord who accepted the one who insulted Him, and turned the insult into a hymn, will not abandon a devotee who sings without rhyme or metre. That is the faith of the sixth song.
