Explanation

To understand 'irul-ser iruvinai', we must first remember that the 'two deeds' are good deeds and bad deeds. That bad deeds bind a person is easy to see. The deeper insight is that even good deeds, when done with 'I did this' and 'I must get the reward', also become a binding. So Valluvar describes both as 'irul-ser', rooted in the darkness of ignorance. Some commentators read the phrase as 'the two deeds that bring darkness', but the sense is similar.

'Porul-ser pugazh' can also be understood in two ways. It may mean the praise of the Lord that is full of real meaning, and it may mean praise that comes truly from the heart rather than flattery. The word 'purindhaar' suggests those who took delight in it. Such people take pleasure in honouring the greatness of another rather than advertising their own. As they praise in this way, the swollen sense of 'I' gradually dissolves, and where it dissolves, the grip of deeds loosens.

In practice most of us keep a mental ledger: the good we have done, the wrongs done to us. The habit of grateful, sincere praise lightens that load. Think of someone who spends an hour bitterly counting grievances, and someone who spends the same hour thanking the people who helped them along the way. The second walks away lighter. That is the everyday teaching of this verse: the way of release goes through appreciation, not through accounting. Valluvar is not asking us to stop acting. We must act, but without the swelling of 'I did it' and without clinging to the fruit.

A story

Nandanar Reaches Chidambaram

From the Periya Puranam.

In the village of Adanur in the Chola country lived Nandanar, also known as Tirunalaipovar. He was born into a labouring community and worked the fields. Yet his whole heart was full of Lord Shiva. Even when he could not enter temples, he stood outside and sang to the Lord in worship. He also served as he could, offering materials for temple drums.

Once he longed to worship at the shrine of Tirupunkur. Standing outside and singing, he is said to have been granted the Lord's sight when Shiva asked the Nandi bull to move aside. After that, at every shrine, a yearning rose in his heart: "When shall I see the Lord who dances in the little hall of Thillai?" But he feared his birth, and kept saying, "I will go tomorrow," and let the days pass. This is why he was called Tirunalaipovar, "the one who will go tomorrow."

At last one day he set out with resolve and reached the boundary of Thillai, Chidambaram. But he felt himself unworthy to enter a town filled with the sound of the Vedas and the smoke of sacrifices, and stood at the edge, grieving. That night the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him to rise through fire and come. The Lord also appeared in the dreams of the Brahmins of Thillai and asked them to make the arrangements. They lit a fire. Thinking of the Lord's feet, Nandanar stepped into it, rose in the form of a sage, entered the hall and merged with the Lord, the Purana says.

The kural says that the two deeds, good and bad, which bind the soul in darkness, do not cling to those who sing the Lord's praise with a pure heart. Nandanar's life shows that a person is raised by devotion, not by birth.
