Explanation

The opening phrase of this verse, 'malarmisai eginaan', has been read in more than one way by the old commentators. Some take it to mean the One who walked over a flower. Others take it to mean the One who dwells upon the lotus of the devotee's heart, and Parimelazhagar and some of the other classical commentators lean towards that image of the heart as a lotus. Either way the flower, with its softness and fragrance, stands for the gentleness of divine grace. Think how delicate one must be to walk upon a bloom without crushing it; the verse hints that the Supreme is just that tender.

The second half says that those who reach such feet will 'neetu vaazhvaar' upon the earth. Many readers take this as long life. Others read it as living on in good name, remembered for the good that one has done. Valluvar's real concern is perhaps the quality of the life rather than its length. People who are humble and rooted in conscience tend to live without constant tension and enmity, in an orderly way, so health of body and mind naturally lasts. Their goodness also lives on after them.

In ordinary life we can see how those with a gentle mind and an unhurried step carry a lasting calm around them. Haste and harshness shorten a life; compassion and order lengthen it. We may read this verse and ask ourselves what gentleness we are holding on to, and what the ground under our feet would say of the way we have walked on it.

A story

Markandeya, Forever Sixteen

From the Shiva Purana and the Markandeya tradition.

The sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudmati were long without a child and prayed in penance to Lord Shiva. The Lord appeared and asked, "Do you want a long-lived son who lacks wisdom, or a son of rare wisdom who will live only sixteen years?" They chose the wise son. So Markandeya was born, and from childhood he shone in learning and devotion. When he learned that his life was to be sixteen years, he comforted his grieving parents, saying, "I will take refuge at the holy feet of Lord Shiva alone," and began to worship.

The last day of his sixteenth year came. While he was worshipping the Shiva lingam, the messengers of Yama could not approach him and turned back. Then Yama himself came with his noose. Markandeya was not afraid; he clasped the lingam tightly. The noose Yama threw fell not only on him but also on the lingam.

In that moment, the Purana says, Lord Shiva came forth from the lingam and kicked Yama with his foot, to protect the child who had taken refuge in him. For this he is praised as Kalasamharamurti, the one who conquered Death. Afterwards, when Yama rose from his bow, Shiva granted Markandeya the boon of living on for ever at the age of sixteen. In the Tamil tradition this episode is associated with the temple town of Tirukkadavur.

Valluvar says that those who reach the feet of the Lord, gentle and fragrant like a flower, will live long upon the earth. "Long life" here is not only a count of years. Like Markandeya, one who clings to the Lord's feet gains a fame and a peace that time cannot erase. Even today, whenever the name of Markandeya is spoken, his unshaken devotion is what we recall.

To reflect on

If your daily way of walking through the world were compared to stepping among flowers, where would you slow down?
