Explanation

A great part of our mental worry is born from comparison. If the neighbour buys a new car, our old one suddenly looks poor. If a classmate rises to a higher post, our own position seems small. A comparing mind is always glancing at those above it, and it frets. The phrase 'thanakku uvamai illaadhaan', the One who has no match, breaks that net. Once we begin to dwell on what has no equal, the measures of 'I am less than that one, more than this one' lose their meaning.

The word 'allaal' separates 'except for those who...'. But 'aridhu' does not mean 'impossible'; it means 'hard'. Friends who console, a doctor who treats, rest and sleep, all of these reduce worry. Yet if the root of worry is the habit of measuring ourselves against others, the thorough cure lies in being freed from that habit. That is the subtlety Valluvar points to. When the mind rests in what is beyond comparison, our little wins and losses look small beside it.

This is strikingly current. On social media we look at the polished fragments of other lives and conclude that ours is lacking. Ranks in examinations and appraisals at work become instruments for measuring our worth. At such moments, to stop comparing and sit quietly before something that has no equal is a powerful remedy. A clear sky at dawn, a mountain, a silent ocean: any of them can reset our scale. The verse invites us to carry that stillness inside, so that our peace no longer depends on how we look next to someone else.

A story

Dhruva Finds His Refuge

From the Bhagavata Purana.

King Uttanapada had two queens. The elder, Suniti, had a son, Dhruva; the younger, Suruchi, had a son, Uttama. One day the five-year-old Dhruva saw Uttama sitting on his father's lap and wished to climb up there himself. Seeing this, Suruchi spoke harshly: "If you want a place on the king's lap, you should have been born from my womb. Go and pray to the Lord." The father said nothing in reply.

Weeping, Dhruva ran to his mother Suniti. Holding back her own tears she comforted him: "Child, blame no one. A place given by people is never lasting. Take refuge only at the feet of Vishnu, the refuge of all." The boy held fast to these words and set off into the forest. On the way the sage Narada met him and tried to turn him back because he was so young, but seeing his resolve, taught him the way to Madhuvana on the Yamuna bank and the mantra for worship.

At Madhuvana Dhruva reduced his food and sleep, controlled his breath and performed penance for six months. At last Vishnu appeared before him. The boy stood unable to speak, and the Lord touched his cheek with his conch; at once hymns of praise flowed from Dhruva's lips. He had come seeking a kingdom, but on seeing the Lord he stood content and wanted nothing more, like one who has found a priceless gem and no longer cares for bits of glass. Later he ruled well for a long time and, the Purana says, received the eternal place of the Pole Star, the star that does not move.

The kural says that mental sorrow cannot be cured except by reaching the feet of the One without an equal. That fits Dhruva's experience exactly.
