Explanation

'Pori vaayil aindhu' means the five sense organs: eye, ear, nose, tongue and skin. Valluvar calls them gateways. If a fort has five gates and a man leaves them all open and unguarded, he cannot hold the fort. The fort here is the mind, and its gates are the five senses. Through sight, sound, smell, taste and touch, desires walk in.

The word 'avithaan' carries the sense of quenching a fire. The idea is not to destroy the senses but to cool their burning cravings and bring them under one's own rein. The eye is still there, but it does not chase whatever it sees. The tongue still tastes, but taste does not become the purpose of life. Valluvar speaks of this mastery as a quality of the Supreme, and says that those who stand on the path of 'poi-dheer ozhukka neri', conduct free of falsehood, will live long.

There are two key ideas here: control of the senses and truthfulness. A person ruled by their senses is often forced to lie and cheat, because satisfying a craving can mean giving up honesty. Truthful conduct comes naturally when there is mastery over the senses. In today's world the gates are numerous: the phone screen, advertising, fast food, endless feeds. Freedom does not mean shutting all of them for ever. It means being the one who decides which gate is opened, when, and for how long. That authority is what the verse promises as the root of a steady and long life. The word 'poi-dheer', free of falsehood, matters too: restraint worn only as an outer show is pretence. What is meant is conduct that is the same within and without.

A story

Nachiketa and Yama

From the Katha Upanishad.

The sage Vajasravasa performed a sacrifice in which he gave away all his wealth. But the cows he gave were old, drained, past giving milk and past drinking water. His son Nachiketa, though only a boy, saw this and asked, "Father, to whom will you give me?" At the third asking his angry father said, "I give you to Yama." Nachiketa went to Yama's house to make his father's word true. Yama was away, so he waited three days without food or water.

When Yama returned, he regretted with courtesy that his guest had gone hungry, and said, "Ask three boons, one for each night." For the first boon Nachiketa asked that his father's anger be calmed. For the second he asked to learn the fire sacrifice that leads to heaven. For the third he said, "When a man has died, does he continue to exist, or not? Teach me this truth."

Yama tried to avoid giving that boon. "Even the gods find this a hidden matter. Ask for another. I will give you sons who live a hundred years, great wealth, elephants, horses, long life, beautiful women, music." But Nachiketa was firm. "These are pleasures of the senses, sir, that wear away by tomorrow. I do not want them. I want no boon but the one I asked." Seeing his steadiness, Yama was pleased and said, "The good is one thing, the pleasant is another. You have chosen the good." He then taught him about the imperishable nature of the Self, the Upanishad tells us.

Valluvar speaks of those who follow the path of one who conquered the desires of the five senses. How well that describes Nachiketa, who refused every pleasure that came through the senses and followed the truth alone!
