Meaning

At that time when Yama, on his black rugged buffalo, takes up his net and noose, grinds his teeth, glares, makes trouble and follows with outstretched hand, the vel, the peacock and Guha the supreme guru come in friendship; and the rooster comes crying out among the devotees, pecking the shrieking angry fiends and circling to strike them. O holy rooster banner of the one who is equal to that master who was born at Sirkazhi, drank the nectar of grace, received the pearl palanquin and sang sweet Tamil at length to Shiva's delight, who cured the burning fever that scorched the Pandya's body, defeated the Jains in debate and had the sacred ash worn so that the world knew the truth!

Explanation

Arunagirinathar follows the tradition that honours Sambandar as an incarnation of Murugan. The assurance for the devotee is that when Yama comes, the spear, the peacock and the guru will come as friends. (The traditional accounts of the debate at Madurai vary.)

From the Periya Puranam, the life of Thirujnanasambandar

'The sacred ash is the mantra'

In Madurai, the Pandya king Koon Pandiyan suffered from a terrible burning fever. Queen Mangaiyarkarasi and the minister Kulachchirai called for Sambandar. The boy Sambandar sang the hymn 'Manthiramavathu neeru', the sacred ash is the mantra, and smeared the ash on the king's body. The fever left him; even the king's hunched back straightened, and he became Nindraseer Nedumaran. Shaivism flourished again in Madurai.
