Meaning

The rooster that pins down with its clawed foot and pecks the many brahmarakshasas with bodies vast as fire, the spirits sent by sorcery, the murderous ghouls, and the fierce fiends who rise like black rugged mountains or bamboo to touch the sky, so that they scream and flee. O holy rooster banner of Guha: the Lord who dances on little feet with jingling anklets so that rutting elephants and serpents across the world tremble; the Kumara given by Shiva, knower of the Vedas, who burned the three cities with a smile; the sun that dispels darkness, Saravanabhava!

Explanation

The list of fiends names people's everyday fears. The rooster drives them away. Murugan is called 'the sun that dispels darkness': when light comes, darkness flees of itself.

From the Shiva Purana

The three cities burned by a smile

The three sons of Tarakasura built three flying cities of gold, silver and iron and tormented the world. They could be destroyed only when, once in a thousand years, they came into a single line. The gods made Shiva a chariot: the earth was the chariot, the sun and moon its wheels, Meru the bow. But Shiva never shot the arrow; he smiled, and in that smile the three cities burned. The gods' pride was humbled too.
