Meaning

The rooster that comes crowing, crying out to terrify, cutting down the base troops of fiends who come roaring to fight, pecking their ears, tearing and shaking them in anger and flinging them as offerings to the eight directions, then, victorious, beating its shining wings, leaping and crowing. O holy rooster banner of the one who taught the honey-sweet three-fold Tamil to Agastya, the sage of the Pothigai hills: famed Subrahmanya, sharp of mind, ocean of every art, who hurled the spear so that false illusions trembled and the sea and the mountain split; whose shoulders wear vetchi garlands, whose crown is set with the nine gems!

Explanation

The rooster's crow is the sound of victory. After it comes another glory of Murugan: teacher of Tamil. That he taught Tamil even to Agastya is the tradition that makes Murugan the god of Tamil.

From the Tamil grammatical tradition

Agastya and Murugan

At the wedding of Shiva and Parvati on Kailasa, everyone gathered in the north and the earth tilted. To balance it, Shiva sent Agastya south to the Pothigai hills. Tradition says that there Agastya learned Tamil from Murugan and composed the first grammar, the Agathiyam. So Tamil is 'the Tamil Agastya gave', and its first teacher is Murugan.
