Meaning

The rooster that grants that the troubles of devotees who come every day may end, that they may see the high goal meant for them, that their twofold karma, whirling like a serpent's jewel, may be set in order and their darkness and poverty destroyed; and if quarrelsome ghouls, dwarf goblins and fierce serpents come in strength, it plucks out their eyes, rips open their bodies, then stands and dances beating its wings. O holy rooster banner of the six-faced one: Murugan who hurled the spear so that mountains cracked, waves dried up and asuras died; the child of Saravana whose arms embrace the hunter's daughter and Indra's daughter; who rapped Brahma on the head so that he trembled!

Explanation

The rooster is the bird that drives away darkness. It confronts everything that frightens devotees. The fierce images are pictures of our own fears; the verse is an assurance of the grace that overcomes them.

From the guardian-deity tradition of Tamil villages

Guardians at the village edge

At the edges of Tamil villages stand guardian deities such as Ayyanar and Karuppasamy, on horseback, holding weapons. People believe they ride round the village at night driving evil away. Whether a new house is built or a wedding held, the first offering goes to them. Murugan's rooster stands guard over devotees in the same way.

To reflect on

What 'darkness' frightens you? Can you name it?
