One of the six paths

Sauram

The worship of the Sun, the God we can see

Sauram is the path that worships Surya, the Sun, as the Supreme. It is one of the six paths of worship of Sanatana Dharma, the Shanmatam. Other deities we see in the temple and in the mind, but the Sun we see with our own eyes every day, so he is called Pratyaksha Deivam, "the God who is seen". The Puranas tell how he crosses the sky each day in a one-wheeled chariot drawn by seven horses, with Aruna, the dawn, as his charioteer.

The Gayatri mantra, called the mother of the Vedas, meditates on the light of Savitr, the Sun, and prays, "May he awaken our minds." In the Sandhya Vandanam, performed three times a day, water is offered to the Sun. The Aditya Hridayam, which the sage Agastya taught Rama on the battlefield of Lanka, and the Surya Namaskar, which strengthens body and mind, both come from this worship.

Sun worship is very old in Tamil life. Ilango Adigal begins the Silappathikaram with the words "Gnayiru potrudhum, gnayiru potrudhum", "We praise the Sun, we praise the Sun." On the first day of Thai, at Pongal, the first offering of the new rice goes to the Sun, and on the seventh day of the bright fortnight of Thai we keep Ratha Saptami. At the Suryanar Kovil near Kumbakonam, the Sun sits with his consorts Usha and Pratyusha at the centre of the nine Navagrahas.

Bhavishya Purana and Samba Purana

How the Sun Healed Samba

From the Bhavishya Purana and the Samba Purana. Samba was the son of Krishna and Jambavati. He was very handsome, and proud of his beauty. One day the sage Narada came to Dwaraka. All the young Yadavas rose and bowed to him, but Samba, lost in his own good looks, did not honour the sage. Through what followed, Krishna's curse fell upon him, and his beautiful body was struck with leprosy.

His pride broken, Samba fell at his father's feet in sorrow. Krishna showed him the way: "The Sun is the physician who heals all disease. Worship him." Narada himself taught Samba how to worship the Sun.

Samba went to a place called Mitravana on the banks of the Chandrabhaga river. For twelve years he stood in the water every day, chanting the names of the Sun, in hard tapas. Pleased with his humility and devotion, Lord Surya appeared before him and took away the disease, and Samba's body shone even brighter than before.

Samba never forgot this grace. On that spot he raised a temple to the Sun, which the Puranas count among the very first temples of Surya. Even today, on Ratha Saptami, devotees bathe, worship the Sun and pray for good health.
