Introduction

Kaar Narpathu is one of the eighteen minor works of the Tamil canon, ascribed to Madurai Kannangkoothanar. Kaar means the rainy season, and because all forty verses are set in the monsoon, the season became the book's name. Each verse is a venba of four lines.nnThis is akam poetry, the poetry of inner life. The lover has gone away to seek wealth. The rains have come. He had promised to return with the rains and has not come. The heroine grieves; her friend comforts her, points to the season as proof he will return, and sometimes the heroine herself turns bitter. That shifting of voices is the music of the book.nnThe landscape is never decoration. A dancing peacock is her restless mind; lightning across the sky is the messenger of his coming; the flowering kuvalai is her eye opening; the pallor on her skin is her longing made visible. Read this way, the monsoon and the heroine's heart are the same weather.nnIn each venba the first three lines unfold a scene and the fourth turns it. That turn is the craft of the book: every poem arrives as a picture and leaves as a judgement about waiting.

Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha Kanda (sargas 28 to 30), and the Karkala Patalam of the Kamba Ramayanam

Rama Waits Out the Rains

After Vali's death, Sugriva was crowned at Kishkindha. The rains had begun, and no army could march in the wet months, so Sugriva gave his word: when the four months of the monsoon were over, his people would go out in every direction to search for Sita. Rama and Lakshmana went to wait on the Prasravana mountain.nnValmiki gives that waiting a whole canto. The sky fills with dark clouds, lightning flashes like a golden ribbon, peacocks dance, the streams swell and the kadamba trees flower. Every one of these sights wounds Rama, because each reminds him of Sita far away in Lanka. Lakshmana sits beside him and comforts him: the season will turn, the promise will be kept, and grief must not be allowed to wear away the strength needed for the work ahead. Kamban, retelling the story in Tamil, gave this part its own chapter, the Karkala Patalam, the chapter of the rainy season.nnWhen the rains ended and autumn came, Sugriva, lost in pleasure, forgot his word. Lakshmana went to Kishkindha in anger to remind him, and only then did the search begin.nnKaar Narpathu lives inside the same weather. A promise is tied to the rains; the rains come; the one who promised has not. One heart grieves, and a friend sits beside it and says the word will be kept. The poet even begins with Thirumal: the rainbow across the dark sky is like the garland on the chest of the one whose colour is the sea.

To reflect on

The monsoon returns every year. Whether it keeps its promise or breaks it is decided not by the sky but by the heart that waits.
