Explanation

This reads as the lament of Damayanti's companions about the harshness of the night.

The subtle phrase is that surviving is only a name: she is alive but not living.

The night comes in three forms, rain, darkness and the north wind, so sorrow arrives by many roads and each natural event is a pain.

To reflect on

Being alive and living are not the same.
