Desiya Geethangal
53 verses
Desiya Geethangal means 'national songs'. In these fifty-three songs Bharathiyar turns the longing for Indian freedom into music: Tamil as mother, the Tamil land as soil, swaraj as daybreak. The collection holds the songs that became the marching voice of the freedom movement — Vande Mataram, The Worship of the Land, Bharat Nadu, Freedom, The Thirst for Freedom, New Russia — side by side with songs for Tilak, Sivaji, Naoroji and the men of the Congress.

Introduction
Bharathiyar wrote his patriotic songs to be sung. His own notes on raga and tala are proof of it: these are songs shaped for streets, halls and crowds. A simple pallavi anyone can pick up, refrains that return again and again, and lines built to be repeated to the beat — that is the life of these poems.
The collection opens by worshipping the land as the Mother and as the Goddess: Vande Mataram, The Worship of the Land, Bharat Nadu, the dawn hymn that wakes Bharata Mata. Then come the songs of Tamil Nadu and the Tamil language, Senthamizh Nadu and Tamizhthai among them. Next are the freedom songs, The Glory of Freedom, The Crop of Freedom, Liberation. The last part honours Tilak, Gandhi, V.O.C., Lajpat Rai, Dadabhai Naoroji and Guru Govind Singh, and looks out at the world: Belgium, the new Russia, and the Tamil women wasting in the sugarcane fields overseas. So this is not only a political songbook. It worships the motherland as Shakti, and sings the pride of a language and the dignity of a people in one voice.
