Meaning

Live for ever, live, Tamil tongue; may you live, may you live! May the generous tongue that measures all that the sky has measured live on! May it live, scattering its own fragrance and its music through the seven seas! Our Tamil tongue, our Tamil tongue, may you live for ever and ever! Let the darkness around us go, let Tamil rise, and let the world shine! Let old karma's old trouble pass away, and let the Tamil land blaze! Live, Tamil tongue, live, live, live! May the growing tongue that knows all that the sky has known live on!

Explanation

This is one of Bharathiyar's shortest songs of blessing, and yet two of its lines carry weight. In 'it measures all that the sky has measured' Tamil appears as a language that takes all knowledge for its own.

'Scattering its own fragrance through the seven seas' - a language has no boundary of land; spreading is its very life. This is not defence but expansion.

In the closing verse the blessing of a language becomes a social hope: that the dark age go and that old karma pass so the Tamil land may blaze. A language that lives makes a country shine - that conviction breathes through it.

To reflect on

What does it change to speak of a language growing in images of rhythm, music and fragrance?
