Devi Mahatmyam (Markandeya Purana)The Goddess Who Defeated Mahisha
From the Devi Mahatmyam. Mahisha, an asura with the head of a buffalo, won a boon that no man could kill him. Thinking that no woman could harm him, he defeated the devas and seized the throne of Indra.
The suffering devas went to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. As the three listened, a great light blazed from their faces, and light streamed from the bodies of all the devas too. All these lights gathered into one and took the form of a Goddess whose radiance filled the worlds. She was Durga.
Shiva gave her his trident, Vishnu his discus, Indra his thunderbolt, and Himavan the lion she rides. With weapons in her eighteen hands she rode her lion into battle, and Mahisha's armies scattered before her.
Mahisha fought her as a buffalo, then a lion, then an elephant, then a man. At last the Goddess pinned him beneath her foot and struck him down with her trident. So she is praised as Mahishasuramardini, "the slayer of Mahisha". The nine nights of that battle and the victory on the tenth day are Navaratri and Vijayadasami. The meaning of the story is that the Mother is the power of all the gods gathered into one.
