Meaning

You have planted the desire for freedom all over the land, you have kindled a fire; I shall wear you down and shut you up in prison - I shall show you my strength. You gathered crowds and shouted Vande Mataram; you reviled us; you sailed ships so that we had to run, and you made money. You told the cowardly people the truth; you broke the law; you scolded them that it is shameful to live poor here; you talked of valour. You turned slavish eunuchs into men; you took away meanness; you brought back those who had said 'we have had enough of subjection'; you put desire into them. You stirred up those who had made service their only trade; you sought fame; you showed the ways to learn visible trades; you drove away weariness. Everywhere you have ordered this wish for self-rule; you have scattered the seed. Will a small hare do the work of a lion? Will you be saved? I shall burn you down, wear out your wits and have my say; I shall stab and kill; is there anyone who talks big? I shall throw you into prison, and take the blame myself.

Explanation

This is a dramatic lyric: the speaker is a British officer, and the reply comes in the next poem. Through the officer's mouth Bharathiyar lists the achievements of the freedom movement - whether in praise or in mockery is left open.

'I shall wear you down and lock you in prison' exposes the government's fear, but in the same breath the whole work-sheet of the movement is written out: breaking the law, speaking of valour, learning trades, self-rule.

The question the officer is given - 'will a small hare do the work of a lion?' - is the centre of the poem, and it is answered by the next song, Chidambaram Pillai's reply.

To reflect on

Why is listing the movement's achievements in the enemy's voice such a powerful poetic strategy?
