Meaning

Our Mother is of a nature that even the scholars who know everything that has ever happened cannot fathom: they cannot tell when she was born. She is of an age no one can fix; yet this being has always appeared as a virgin. She has thirty crore faces but one life; she speaks eighteen tongues but has a single thought. She has the Vedas on her tongue and a shining sword in her hand: she is the one who grants lovely grace to those who seek her, and the shoulder that settles the wicked. With sixty crore broad hands she carries on the works of dharma, and she crushes to dust those who come wanting to fight her. She bears more weight than the earth, and her heart is full of merit: in this she is like Durga, who stands spear in hand, ornamented to the shoulder. She bows with her hands to the ascetic who wears the crescent in his matted hair, and she bows to the one who rules the seven worlds with a single discus. In yoga she has no equal; she knows well that truth is one; she is full even of enjoyment and owns a heap of gold beyond counting. She blesses kings who seek the good law, and if they are not such, she swallows them and then dances in delight. She is the valiant daughter of the Himalaya, whose whiteness ever grows; though his strength should vanish, she never vanishes, and every day she shines in glory.

Explanation

In 'Our Mother', the mother means the land, the language and the people all at once. Thirty crore faces and eighteen languages, yet one life and one thought: for Bharathiyar Bharat is a collective being, a mother standing with many faces just as a single woman does.

Notice too that this Mother bows to the ascetic and to the wielder of the discus, so she is also a devotee. And yet she blesses those who seek dharma and swallows those who do not. This is not a soft song about a mother; it says love and anger live in the same mother at the same time.

To reflect on

Is this Mother a woman, a country, or a language? What does Bharathiyar show us by singing so many forms as one mother?
