Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana chapters 1 and 4, and the Tamil Siddha traditionThe Five Small Roots
The Charaka Samhita opens with a gathering of rishis on the slopes of the Himalaya. Disease had begun to trouble the world, and the sages saw that a sick body cannot carry out dharma, tapas or the search for liberation. So Bharadvaja went to Indra, who had received the science of life from the Ashvins, the Ashvins from Prajapati, and Prajapati from Brahma. He brought Ayurveda back to earth, and through Atreya and his disciples it reached the physicians of India.nnThat science has a famous compound called the ten roots, dashamoola. It is made of two groups of five. The great five are the roots of five trees: bael, agnimantha, shyonaka, patala and gambhari. The small five, laghu panchamoola, are the roots of five humble plants of the field. In Tamil they are kandankathari, siruvazhudhunai, sirumalli, perumalli and nerunji. Each is ordinary on its own; together they calm fever, cough and pain.nnKariyasan named his book after the small five. Each verse names five things, five virtues to cultivate or five faults to avoid, and offers them as one remedy. Like the roots of the field, the virtues he names are small and close at hand: a kind word, a steady eye, a meal shared, a promise kept. Taken together they heal a life.
