Explanation

This is the height of the svayamvara: Damayanti garlands Nalan. Three scenes in one line: the gods blench, the world rejoices, the kings are disappointed.

Subtly, the kings wear the garland within their minds: they did not receive it, yet they put on its sorrow.

The closing word for gold means both the golden garland and her who is gold, so one word joins two beauties.

To reflect on

One can wear the sorrow of a thing one never received.
