Because his eyes blinked, because his feet touched the ground, because the garland of coloured flowers faded: reasoning from these, that woman of the fair brow who loves the fragrant lotus knew Nalan there.
The verse shows Damayanti identifying Nalan by three signs: blinking eyes, feet touching the ground, a garland that fades.
Subtly, gods do not blink, their feet do not touch the earth, and their garlands do not wither. A man stands on the ground; a man blinks.
This is fine craft: human nature itself is the mark. They say love makes a man a god; this book says the reverse, that humanness is the mark of love.

Being human is itself the mark of love.
