Vaelai peraavamutham veeman thirumatanthai / Maalai peraathakalum vaanaatar - vaelai / Porungkalineer njaalaththaip punneriyi laakkum / Irungkaliyaik kantaa rethir.
The gods, leaving without receiving the garland of Viman's lovely daughter, like ambrosia they could not reach: they saw facing them the great Kali, whose deluding waters turn the world onto a crooked path.
The verse joins the gods' disappointment with Kali's arrival. They who missed the garland are like those who missed ambrosia.
The comparison is well chosen: the gods are seekers of ambrosia, and here the garland was theirs.
Kali comes, the story's first adversary, and the phrase his waters shows him as a flood: evil is a force, not merely a personal fault.
Evil is not only a personal fault; it is a force.
