Mallikaiyae vensangkaa vantootha vaankaruppu / Villi kanaitherinthu meykaappa - mullaiyenum / Menmaalai thoalasaiya mella natanthathae / Punmaalai yanthip pozhuthu.
As the white jasmine became a conch and bees blew it, and the dark archer in the sky knew his arrow and guarded himself, the tender garland called jasmine swaying on the shoulders, the mean evening called twilight walked slowly in.
The verse draws twilight as a woman walking slowly in. Jasmine becomes a conch, bees its blowers, and white meets the dark.
Subtly, the word for the evening means a mean or lowly evening, so it is an unwelcome arrival; for the parted, evening is pain.
Walking slowly shows time creeping. In Damayanti's loneliness, time moves slowly.

For the parted, evening itself is pain.
