Meaning

My heart cannot bear it when I think of these fallen men. They die of fear upon fear; there is nothing in the world they do not fear. They say there are spirits of deceit, that one is in this tree, that one in that pond, that one sleeps on the roof; they grieve greatly and are afraid at the very thought. They say a sorcerer is about, and at the mere word panic seizes their minds; charms and black rites, and how many thousands more sorrows! In the world all kings live upon the wealth the people give; but they think that politics is a dreadful ghost and their hearts sink. They fear a soldier; when the town watchman comes their heart pounds; if a man with a gun is seen far off they hide in the house; if some stranger walks by later they rise in fear at the very sight of his clothes; always they fold their hands and move about among all men like moaning cats. My heart cannot bear it when I think of these fallen men. Are their divisions few? If it be one crore, does that make it great? One says the serpent has five heads; if the son says it has six, their hearts are split and afterwards they remain enemies for long years. They see nothing in the scriptures, but believe the words of false scripture-shaped ghosts; though they be of one clan, they will destroy and despise a man who differs in one opinion. They chant praises and bow down to low men who cheat them; in hot temper they cry 'this one is a Saiva, that one a Vaishnava' and wage a great quarrel. Even when they think of all this they feel no disgust; they have not even gruel to drink, nor the sense to see why. Crying 'famine, famine' every day they suffer and their life flutters and dies, and there is no way at all to end their sorrows. They have countless diseases and no strength even to rise and walk; like blind children they follow wherever others lead them and are caught. In a holy land that holds ten thousand four hundred crore great arts, these men live like senseless beasts.

Explanation

This sindhu shows a face of Bharathiyar that is rare elsewhere: hard satire. The anger is not aimed at the poor but at the slave mentality. Ghosts, sorcery, the soldier, the watchman - all are forms of one single fear.

Politics enters in the middle of a folk song: kings live on the wealth the people give them, so for the people to dread politics as a ghost is to wound themselves. Caste division, occult dread, the Saiva-Vaishnava quarrel follow one another as a full inventory of the psychology of servitude. The closing image is the sharpest: in a holy land holding vast arts, these people live like senseless beasts.

The returning refrain 'my heart cannot bear it' keeps the song from becoming mere complaint; each time it returns, the weight of what has just been said becomes heavier.

To reflect on

Is fear removed by knowledge alone or by courage alone - which does Bharathiyar put first?
