Meaning

Long live the society of Bharata! Live, live! Victory, victory, victory! A fellowship of thirty crore people, common property for all, a society without equal, a new thing for the world - live!

Is there still a custom of one man snatching another man's food? Is there still a life in which men look on while men suffer? Is there still a life in the senses alone? Is such a life still among us? A great land past counting, with sweet groves and long fields, giving fruit and tubers and grain without measure - this land gives without measure, day after day - live!

We shall make one law from now on and keep it for ever: if a single man has no food, we shall destroy the world - live!

'I dwell in every living being' - so said the great-eyed Lord; and the good way by which all may reach the state of the deathless, India will give to the world - yes, yes! All are of one caste, all are of one race, all are the people of India; all are of one worth, all are of one price; all are kings of this land - we are all kings of this land - live!

Explanation

This is Bharathiyar's social manifesto in song. The opening salutation is to a society that does not yet exist: 'a new thing for the world'.

'If one man has no food, we shall destroy the world' is his sharpest sentence. What is destroyed is not people but the custom of snatching food from one another; the line is not about ruin but about an oath of justice.

In the last verse caste, race, worth and price arrive at a single level. Those four together are the skeleton of slavery, and breaking that skeleton is the work of this poem.

To reflect on

Is the society saluted in the refrain one we live in now, or a dream still to come?
