Meaning

The primal Siva begot me; the Aryan son, a priestly sage named Agastya, saw me and rejoiced, and made and gave me a grammar that holds all fullness. The Tamil kings of three lines raised me daily with eager good love, and among the languages of depth I lived as the equal of lofty Sanskrit. Poets of clear Tamil joined the toddy and the fire, the good wind and the sky's space, and made and gave me many sweet epics; they gave me many scriptures, and I lived praised through the whole earth.

Death is the eyeless one: he wipes away and finishes everything that comes before him. He does not look at good or evil; like a wild flood that collects and carries off all that lies before it, he seizes everything that is gathered in the world and moves on. In my maiden season, the far languages that fell on my ear all had their various names, and afterwards, see, all of them have perished! By my father's grace and by the power of the penance of the poets who were before, until this moment Death has been afraid even to lift his eyes to me.

Today I heard one saying, and what shall I do now, my children who are my very life! A word like a killing word was spoken here by one who should not have spoken it. New-made arts, arts that tell the subtleties of the five elements, grow greatly in the West; those high arts are not in Tamil; they cannot even be spoken; Tamil has not the power to utter them; gently Tamil will now die, and those Western tongues will rise over the earth, so that fool boasts. Ah, can this disgrace fall on me? Go to the eight directions, and bring all the wealth of the arts and gather it here! By my father's grace and by the power of the penance of the poets who hold to me today, this great blame will be wiped away, and my fame will rise and remain on earth for ever.

Explanation

The speaker here is not the poet but the mother tongue herself. She tells her own history: daughter of Siva, student of Agastya, fostermother of the three Tamil kings, and the epics of the Sangam poets. It is not praise but a record.

The turn of the poem lies in the words 'Tamil will now die'. The man who said it is a fool, yet what he said is not merely slander: at that time Tamil had no ready language for Western science, and that was true. So Bharathiyar does not merely curse him; he takes up a task.

The politics of the poem appears in the last two lines: go to the eight directions and bring the wealth of the arts home. This is not defence but acquisition, not retreat but learning and recovery.

To reflect on

Is a mother tongue saved by recalling its old glory or by taking in new knowledge?
