Meaning

Day after day the stench and the mire and the moss have buried it, and it has no useful water left - is this a design that it should become a field of disease and perish? O Fate, Fate, what have you meant to do with the Tamil race - speak to me! Or will you dispose it, changing with every refuge it takes, in such a way that its own nature and its own dharma never die, and it stands for ever in one place and lives by your grace along with the things that live? Or will you keep the outward appearance and the outside trade, while the dharma within and the truth change, and cast it among things that rot and perish? Is it a sea that does not perish? A bed of bright flowers? A star in the sky? A lamp in a palace? The wish-giving tree? Or a tree in the forest? O Fate, tell me truly in what way you have ordained the Tamil race. For - weighing the verse of the Silappadikaram, the firmness and clarity of the Kural, the depth and breadth and beauty of its meaning, and the effort of Kamban to show by his signs that meaning which is 'no limit anywhere' - I had once held firmly that the Tamil race was of an immortal nature. Even when it fell into ten thousand evil mouths, seeing the ways in which the Tamil race has been lifted without any support, my heart did not waver. In the Cape country of Africa, in many islands near the southern tip, in many islands under the belly of the globe, this wide Tamil race has spread; that it suffers from the blow of the stick, the blow of the foot and the blow of the rope; news of it dying and news of it perishing; news of women dying because they could not bear the barbarians parting them; death from hunger, death from disease; and death of the stricken who are far from their own land - hearing all this, my heart did not break, because the faith was rooted in me that those who forget not God and fail not in their duty, whatever they do and whatever they suffer, win greatness and joy in the end. But even so, having taken this great conviction to heart and remained unshaken, listen clearly to one thing that shakes me. A race that bears every blow that falls on it, that bears the sinking of gift and penance as the world dies when the sky fails, and perishes when wisdom fails - know that scripture is the very height of a race; without scripture there is no race; people into whom false scripture enters become falsehood and die like worms. In a race that men of the four kinds of clan approach, the leaders who bear the leadership of knowledge - and what these men divide out is scripture itself - even if their bodies and minds are not in their own control and they fall into a state of straying from the way and being despised, it is no great matter; there is still a medicine for that; even after deed and character have sunk, some ways of recovery remain. But if there is confusion in this scripture of theirs - that is, in the conviction, the thought, the cooling purpose grasped by the mind - then afterwards there is no medicine at all. Today in our Tamil land those who have taken the leadership of knowledge to themselves are of two kinds, I have seen. One party says: the deed, the walk, the food, the dress, the conviction, the religion and the marks of the white people who live in the West are better than ours; therefore embrace them wholly and be immersed in them; the Tamil race will not remain on the earth, and it is praised as the final end to get a false ruin. 'Excellent! excellent! we shall now embrace the whole Western way and live' - but then they say, 'Ah! ah! that too will not suit you'; and they kindly explain how to remove the many great obstacles that block you from embracing the life-giving ways of the West. The meaning of this is: the physicians trained in foreign medicines have shaken their heads over the disease of the Tamil race and gone away. That is one party. The other party, under the Vedic name: were our ancestors those who lived forty years ago? Or those who lived three hundred years back? Those of a thousand years ago, or five thousand? Those of the time when the Buddhists filled the whole land? Or the time that the Puranas made? Saivas? Or the Vaishnavas? Those of the Vedic time when our forefathers held that Indra alone was the first god? Who here are the thoughtless men who are our ancestors? If the customs and walk and rites and convictions our ancestors showed us so well are embraced exactly as they showed them, then the Tamils have life; but, they say, Kali will create obstacles so that such embracing cannot be done, and the strength of Kali cannot be conquered. These are the physicians of every land who pronounce ruin. Here, between these two millstones, how are our people to be saved? O Fate, Fate, what instrument are you being for the Tamil race? FATE: If our people despise the destructive scholars you spoke of above, and if, wherever good and knowledge are shown by anyone in any direction, you embrace those and live - then there is not one fear!

Explanation

This is Bharathiyar's longest and most difficult argumentative poem. Its form is question and answer: the poet questions Fate, and Fate replies at the end.

First the state of the Tamil race - mire, moss, a field of disease - then a roll of the sufferings of Tamils scattered across the world: the stick, the rope, hunger, disease, women torn apart from their own.

'Scripture is the height of a race' - a race rises through its scripture, that is, through the conviction of its intellectual leadership. If that conviction is confused there is no medicine left: this is the poem's central argument.

Then the two parties: those who would embrace the West entirely, and those who, under a Vedic name, ask 'who were our ancestors' and command the old way exactly. Both, the poet says, are physicians who refuse to treat the Tamil race.

Fate's answer is simple: despise the prophets of ruin, take whatever is good and wise from wherever it comes, and then there is nothing to fear. Bharathiyar's position stands outside the old-versus-new poles altogether.

சிந்தனைக்கு

'நல்லது எங்கிருந்து வந்தாலும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்' என்பது எளிய சொல்; ஆனால் அதை நடைமுறையில் செய்வது ஏன் கடினம்?

To reflect on

'Take the good from wherever it comes' is a simple sentence - why is it so hard to practise?
