Meaning
Though I leave the house that gives me food, though I fall into a prison full of pain, though both my holy feet should turn and I be brought to great shame, though a crore of troubles of many kinds arise and destroy me, Goddess Freedom, I will not forget to bow to you. Those who have not won your grace, though they be wealthy beyond compare, though they rise high with rare learning and listening, though they excel in greatness past counting - their life is waste; they are like a corpse dressed in ornaments. Goddess, is a land that has not your light a land at all? Has it life? Has it right wisdom? Has it growth? Has it epics, arts of wisdom, Vedas? Are not those who have not made your service their own the wretched? They die of unending disease, they cannot know one stirring of effort, they stand at the lowest step while all the passing crowd despises them, they do not choose a life without meanness, they do not see joy even in dream - these who have not your grace, O Mother, who gives greatness that outlasts ruin.
Again: Goddess, those who search for your grace, whose hearts wither away, who give their very life and their own love - even if what they stand in is a cruel prison, it is fit to be called the heaven that never passes. Mother, men do not know your worth; they think base service is what is right; they must be told that the golden palace reached through the joys of this life is a burning petty jail. The people of many lands in the West, by their valour, won a new state of being, praising you; they counted it worth giving a crore of lives to Death if only they might win your greatness. Mother, who take a mother's own nature, what can I, your servant, say and sing of you? I have appeared in a land that has lost its fullness and all greatness, a land without your emblem, a dying land. Keeping the great dharma is the rampart! Light that flashes and cuts the dark of weary life, of sorrow and of blows! Nectar of heroes! I beg for your thought.

Explanation
This is a hymn that sets Freedom up as a goddess. In the first five lines the speaker counts his sorrows - house, prison, shame, a crore of troubles - and one thing survives them all: that he does not forget to worship.
The second movement is a sharp social judgment: wealth without grace is a corpse dressed in ornaments. Prosperity without freedom is therefore not life.
The closing verse recalls the valour of the Western nations, teaching that freedom is not given but bought at a price, which is why the song ends by calling Freedom the nectar of heroes.
To reflect on
Can freedom be the measure of a life - and what is wealth without it worth?
