Vaavi yuraiyum matavanamae yennutaiya / Aavi yuvanthaliththaa yaathiyaal - kaavinitaith / Thaervaenthar kennilaimai senruraiththi yenruraiththaal / Paarvaenthan paavai pathaiththu.
The daughter of the king of the land, trembling, said: ‘O young swan who dwells in the pond, you have gladly given me back my life. So go to the chariot king in the grove and tell him how it is with me.’
Now Damayanthi herself sends the swan as messenger, and the embassy runs both ways.
‘You have given me life’ is a lovely paradox: the swan's news made her swoon, yet the same news gave her life its meaning.
Hearing of him, Damayanti too falls in love with Nala and wastes away, neither eating nor sleeping.
The one who brings good news is like one who gives life.
