Introduction

Nalavenba was composed by Pugazhendhi Pulavar in the thirteenth century. Its frame comes straight from the Mahabharata: the sage Brihadashva tells the story of Nalan and Damayanthi to Yudhishthira, who has lost his kingdom and is grieving in the forest. The book is therefore not only a narrative but a consolation offered to a man in trouble.\n\nNalan and Damayanthi are not stock figures here; they are two people who have to bear the ups and downs of a life. The goose that carries a message, the friend who gives counsel, the assembly of kings, the road through the forest, the fire, and at last the recovery of the city: the poem moves from scene to scene. Its motion is not complaint about fate but endurance, search, and getting back what was lost.\n\nSustaining a story this long in venba metre is Pugazhendhi's particular skill. Each venba stands on its own and can be read alone; read in sequence they make an epic. In Tamil it is a clear instance of the inner life and the politics of a kingdom held inside one book.\n\nVerse counts differ between editions. This electronic text numbers the verses 1 to 405 (13 prefatory, 155 in the Svayamvara Kandam, 148 in the Kalithodar Kandam and 89 in the Kalineengu Kandam). Other editions count 427 venbas (7 + 171 + 155 + 94), and some give 379. The numbering of this edition is used here throughout; no verse has been added or dropped.

Mahabharata, the Book of the Forest

The Frame of the Story

Yudhishthira is living in the forest, grieving over the kingdom and the honour he has lost. The sage Brihadashva comes to see him and tells him that grieving is of no use: trouble has not come to him alone. To show that it came to his forebears too, he begins the story of Nalan.\n\nNalan is king of Nishadha. He hears of Damayanthi and falls in love; a goose carries the message between them. At her svayamvara she puts the garland on him. But the Kali spirit, who had come there to be chosen and was passed over, resolves to take revenge.\n\nNalan loses his whole kingdom at dice. Separation, the road, fire, a changed body, the friend who goes searching, and at last the garland again: they pass through all of it and come back together, and the lost kingdom with them.\n\nOnly after hearing this does Yudhishthira find the courage to bear his own loss. That is why the book is described not merely as a tale of wisdom but as one that consoles the man who has lost everything.

To reflect on

What have you lost and gone on grieving over? Are you still mourning it, instead of beginning the search?
