Meaning

‘You of the lightning-bright, sharp spear, in my age I will not go near those who hear your story; this is the truth.’ So Kali swore, standing before the lord of the rich land of fragrant groves, and went away.

Explanation

Kali gives his word and departs. This is the basis of the belief, the phalashruti, that reading or hearing the story of Nala, including the Nalavenba, brings merit.

The final victory over evil is won not by war but by dharma.

Nalavenba, Kalineengu Kandam; compare Mahabharata, Vana Parva (Nalopakhyana)

Kali Grants It and Departs

Kali grants the boon and departs.

To reflect on

Listening to the stories of the good is a shield against evil.
