ஏலாதி பதினெண் கீழ்க்கணக்கு நூல்களுள் ஒன்று; ஆசிரியர் கணிமேதையார். சிறப்புப் பாயிரமும் கடவுள் வணக்கமும் கொண்டு, எண்பது வெண்பாக்களால் ஆனது. 'ஏலாதி' என்பது ஏலம், இலவங்கப்பட்டை, நாகப்பூ, மிளகு, திப்பிலி, சுக்கு என்னும் ஆறு பொருள்களால் ஆகிய மருந்தின் பெயர். அம்மருந்து உடலின் நோயைத் தீர்ப்பதுபோல, ஒவ்வொரு பாடலும் ஆறு அறங்களை ஒன்றுசேர்த்து உள்ளத்தின் நோயைத் தீர்க்கிறது. இதே முறையில் அமைந்த நூல்களே திரிகடுகம் (மூன்று), சிறுபஞ்சமூலம் (ஐந்து).nnஇந்நூல் இல்லறம், துறவறம், அரசியல், கல்வி, ஈகை, உயிர்க்கொலை மறுத்தல் எனப் பல துறைகளைத் தொடுகிறது. புகழ், பொருள், சொல், வீரம், கல்வி, ஈகை ஆகிய ஆறும் மறைவழி நடப்பவர்க்கே அழகு என்று முதல் பாடல் தொடங்குகிறது. பசித்தவர், முதியவர், கருவுற்ற பெண், குழந்தை, நோயாளி ஆகியோருக்கு உணவிட்டு நோய் தீர்ப்பவரைப் பல பாடல்கள் போற்றுகின்றன.nnமொழி சுருக்கமானது; ஒவ்வொரு பாடலும் ஆறு பொருள்களை எண்ணி வைத்து, இறுதியில் அவற்றைச் செய்பவர் பெறும் பயனைச் சொல்லி முடிகிறது. படிப்பவர் தம்மிடம் அந்த ஆறில் எத்தனை உள்ளன என்று எண்ணிப் பார்க்க வைக்கும் நூல் இது.

Introduction

Elathi is one of the eighteen minor works of the Tamil canon, by Kanimethaiyar. It opens with a prefatory verse and an invocation and then runs to eighty venbas. The name is that of a well known medicinal compound of six ingredients: cardamom, cinnamon bark, nagakesara, pepper, long pepper and dry ginger. As that compound treats the body, each verse gathers six virtues or duties to treat the mind. Two sister works follow the same plan: Thirikadugam with three, Siru Panchamoolam with five.nnThe verses range over household life and renunciation, kingship, learning, giving, and the refusal to kill. The first verse sets the tone: far-spread fame, wealth, words of authority, firm valour, learning and generosity are the beauty of those who walk the way of the Vedas. Many verses praise the one who feeds the hungry, the aged, the woman with child, the infant and the sick, and takes away their suffering.nnThe language is terse. Each verse counts out its six items and ends by naming what the one who practises them will gain. Read slowly, every verse becomes a short self-examination: how many of the six do I have?

தன்வந்திரி கொண்டுவந்த மருந்து

தேவர்களும் அசுரர்களும் மந்தர மலையை மத்தாகவும் வாசுகியைக் கயிறாகவும் கொண்டு பாற்கடலைக் கடைந்தபோது பல அரும்பொருள்கள் தோன்றின. இறுதியில் அமுதக் கலசத்தைக் கையில் ஏந்தி, நான்கு கைகளுடன் ஒளிரும் ஒருவர் எழுந்தார். அவரே திருமாலின் அம்சமான தன்வந்திரி; ஆயுர்வேதத்தின் முதல்வர் என்று பாகவத புராணம் அவரைப் போற்றுகிறது.nnஅவர் வழி வந்த மருத்துவம் ஒரே மூலிகையால் உடலைத் தேற்றுவதில்லை. நோயாளி, பருவம், நோய் என்பவற்றை எடைபோட்டு, ஒன்றின் குறையை மற்றொன்று நிறைக்கும்படி பல பொருள்களைச் சேர்க்கிறது. ஏலம் முதலாக ஆறு பொருள்கள் சேர்ந்த ஏலாதி அத்தகைய மருந்து; செரிமானம் தந்து உடலுக்கு வெம்மையூட்டும், நாள்தோறும் உண்ணத்தக்க மென்மையானது.nnகணிமேதையார் அந்த மருந்தின் பெயரையே தம் நூலுக்கு இட்டார். ஒரே ஒரு நற்பண்பு ஒரே ஒரு மூலிகை போன்றது: நல்லதுதான், ஆனால் போதாது. கல்வியில்லாப் புகழும், ஈகையில்லாச் செல்வமும், அடக்கமில்லா வீரமும் வாழ்க்கையை நலமாக்கா. ஆறும் அளவறிந்து சேரும்போதுதான் மருந்து பலிக்கும். அதனால்தான் ஏலாதியின் ஒவ்வொரு பாடலும் ஆறு வரை எண்ணுகிறது.

The Physician Who Rose from the Ocean

When the devas and asuras churned the ocean of milk, with Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki as the rope, many treasures rose from the waters. Last of all came a radiant figure, dark and four-armed, carrying a pot of amrita. He was Dhanvantari, a form of Vishnu, and the Bhagavata Purana calls him the founder of Ayurveda, the science of life.nnThe tradition that comes from him does not treat the body with a single herb. It weighs the patient, the season and the disease, and joins several substances so that each corrects and strengthens the others. Elathi, the six-part compound led by cardamom, is one such remedy: warming, digestive, and gentle enough for daily use.nnKanimethaiyar took the name of that medicine for his book. A single virtue, he suggests, is like a single herb: good, but not enough. Fame without learning, wealth without giving, valour without restraint will not heal a life. Only when the six are taken together, in the right measure, does the medicine work. That is why every verse of Elathi counts to six.
