பொருள்
பெருமை, புகழ், அறம், பேணுதல், சீற்றம் அடக்கம், அரிய நூல், சால்பு — இவை இல்லாதவரைச் சார்ந்தால், இம்மைக்கும் மறுமைக்கும் பாவம், பழி, பகை, சாக்காடு, கேடு, அச்சம், சாபம் ஆகியவை சலித்துக்கொண்டு வந்து சேரும்.
Meaning
Greatness, fame, virtue, care, restraint of anger, precious learning and nobility: if you join those who lack these, then for both worlds sin, blame, enmity, death, ruin, fear and curse will come labouring after you.

விளக்கம்
இப்பாடல் ஒரு எச்சரிக்கை. ஏழு நல்லியல்புகள் எண்ணப்பட்டு, அவை இல்லாதவர் யார் என்று சுட்டப்படுகிறார். அதாவது தீயவர் என்பவர் தீய செயல் செய்பவர் மட்டுமல்ல, நல்லியல்பு இல்லாதவர்.
'சாருஞ் சலித்து' என்பது சலித்துக்கொண்டு வந்து சேரும். அதாவது இவை தாமாக விரும்பி வருவதில்லை; நாமே அவற்றை அழைத்து விடுகிறோம்.
Explanation
Seven good qualities are counted and then the man who lacks them is described. The wicked, in this verse, are not only those who act wickedly but those in whom nothing good is present, and the evils come because we invite them.
