Pudhiya Aathichoodi · 111

Pudhiya Aathichoodi, the New Aathichoodi, is Bharathiyar's set of 110 one-line precepts for a new age. Arranged in the order of the Tamil letters like Avvaiyar's Aathichoodi, it begins with 'acham thavir', give up fear, and ends with 'vauvuthal neekku', give up seizing what is not yours. Each precept has its own page here, with meaning, word notes, explanation and a reflection.

Introduction

Avvaiyar's Aathichoodi has been the first book of ethics for generations of Tamil children. Beginning with 'aram seya virumbu', desire to do good, it gives one precept for each letter, first through the vowels and then through the consonant-vowels. Bharathiyar took the same form and sang a New Aathichoodi to awaken a nation in bondage.

Avvaiyar began with virtue; Bharathiyar begins with fearlessness, 'acham thavir'. Alongside bodily strength, hard work, unity, the freedom of women, science, love of country, courage and righteous anger, he gives deep Vedantic truths in a single line: 'know that you are God', 'this world is lila', 'make the Veda new'. Many precepts echo the Gita, the Upanishads and the Thirukkural.

The book opens with an invocation, 'Praise of the Supreme', declaring that Shiva, Vishnu and the God worshipped by other faiths are one Supreme Reality. Here the invocation is the first page and each of the 110 precepts has a page of its own, 111 pages in all.
