பொருள்
நோன்பையும் விரதத்தையும் கைவிடாதே. மேற்கொண்ட நல்ல நெறியையும் உறுதிமொழியையும் தொடர்ந்து கடைப்பிடி.

விளக்கம்
"நோன்பு" என்பது உறுதியோடு கடைப்பிடிக்கும் நெறி. சாவித்திரி தன் கணவன் சத்தியவானுக்காக மேற்கொண்ட நோன்பைக் கைவிடாமல் யமனையே வென்றாள் (மகாபாரதம், வன பர்வம்). பீஷ்மர் தம் இளமையில் எடுத்த பிரம்மச்சரிய விரதத்தை வாழ்நாள் முழுதும் காத்தார்; அதனால்தான் "பீஷ்ம" (கடுமையான விரதம் காத்தவர்) எனப்பட்டார்.
திருவள்ளுவர் "உற்றநோய் நோன்றல்" (குறள் 261) என்று நோன்பின் இலக்கணம் சொல்கிறார். சிறிய விரதமாக இருந்தாலும் அதை விடாமல் காப்பது மன உறுதியை வளர்க்கிறது.
Explanation
'Nonbu' is a discipline kept with resolve. Savitri never gave up the vow she kept for her husband Satyavan, and so overcame Yama himself (Mahabharata, Vana Parva). Bhishma kept the vow of celibacy he took in his youth all his life, and that is why he was called 'Bhishma', the one of the terrible vow.
Thiruvalluvar defines such discipline as bearing the pain that comes (Kural 261). Even a small vow, kept without break, strengthens the mind.
