பொருள்
பெரியதைவிடப் பெரியதைக் கேள். சிறிய இலக்குகளில் நிறைவடையாமல் மிக உயர்ந்ததை வேண்டு.

Ask for what is greater than great. Do not settle for small aims; seek the very highest.

விளக்கம்
சிறியதைக் கேட்பவன் சிறியதையே பெறுகிறான். சாந்தோக்ய உபநிடதம் (7.23.1) "யோ வை பூமா தத் ஸுகம், நால்பே ஸுகமஸ்தி": எது மிகப் பெரியதோ (பூமா) அதுவே இன்பம்; சிறியதில் இன்பம் இல்லை என்கிறது.
நசிகேதன் யமன் தந்த செல்வத்தையும் அரசையும் நீண்ட ஆயுளையும் மறுத்து, ஆத்ம ஞானத்தையே கேட்டான் (கடோபநிஷதம் 1.1.23–29). துருவன் தந்தையின் மடியில் அமரும் இடம் கேட்டுத் தவம் தொடங்கினான்; இறுதியில் எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் மேலான துருவ பதத்தைப் பெற்றான். "பெரிதினும் பெரிது" என்பது இறுதியில் இறைவனே.
Explanation
One who asks for little receives little. The Chandogya Upanishad (7.23.1) says, 'That which is infinite (bhuma) is joy; there is no joy in the small.'
Nachiketa refused the wealth, kingdom and long life Yama offered and asked only for knowledge of the Self (Katha Upanishad 1.1.23 to 29). Dhruva began his tapas wanting a place on his father's lap, and in the end attained the Pole Star, the place above all. 'Greater than great' is, in the end, God himself.
