விளக்கம்
திருவள்ளுவர் "மானம்" என்று ஓர் அதிகாரமே பாடினார். "மயிர்நீப்பின் வாழாக் கவரிமா அன்னார் உயிர்நீப்பர் மானம் வரின்" (குறள் 969). மானம் என்பது ஆணவம் அல்ல; தவறு செய்யாமலும் தவறுக்குப் பணியாமலும் இருக்கும் உள்ளத்தின் பெருமை.
கீதை (2.34) "ஸம்பாவிதஸ்ய சாகீர்திர் மரணாததிரிச்யதே": மதிக்கப்பட்டவனுக்கு இழிவு மரணத்தைவிடக் கொடியது என்கிறது. திரௌபதியின் மானத்தைக் கண்ணன் காத்தான்; மானம் காக்கப் போராடுவதே பாஞ்சாலி சபதம்.
Explanation
Thiruvalluvar wrote a whole chapter on honour: the honourable give up life when honour is lost, like the yak that does not live once it loses its hair (Kural 969). Honour is not arrogance but the dignity of a heart that neither does wrong nor bows to wrong.
The Gita (2.34) says that for one who has been honoured, dishonour is worse than death. Krishna protected Draupadi's honour, and Panchali Sabatham is the fight to protect it.
