போர்முனையில் முகம் கொடுத்து நில். ஆபத்தில் பின்வாங்காமல் முன்னணியில் நேராக எதிர்கொண்டு நில்.

சங்கத் தமிழர் போரில் முதுகில் காயம் பட்டு இறப்பதை இழிவாகவும், மார்பில் காயம் பட்டு இறப்பதைப் பெருமையாகவும் கருதினர். புறநானூற்றில் ஒரு தாய், போரில் இறந்த மகன் முதுகில் புண்பட்டான் என்று கேட்டு, அப்படியானால் அவனுக்குப் பாலூட்டிய மார்பை அறுப்பேன் என்று போர்க்களம் சென்று, மார்பில் புண் கண்டு மகிழ்ந்ததாகப் பாடப்படுகிறது (புறநானூறு 278).
கீதை (2.33) தர்மப் போரை விட்டு விலகுவது பாவமும் இழிவும் என்கிறது. இது போருக்கு மட்டுமல்ல: எந்தச் சிக்கலிலும் முன்வந்து பொறுப்பேற்று நிற்பதே "முனையிலே முகத்து நிற்றல்".
Explanation
The Sangam Tamils thought it shameful to die wounded in the back and glorious to die wounded in the chest. The Purananuru tells of a mother who heard that her son had fallen with a wound in the back, went to the battlefield vowing to cut off the breast that fed him, and rejoiced to find his wound was in the chest (Purananuru 278).
The Gita (2.33) says that to turn away from a righteous battle is both sin and disgrace. This applies not only to war: stepping forward and taking responsibility in any crisis is 'standing at the front, facing forward'.
