விளக்கம்
நிலம் உணவின் மூலம், வாழ்வின் அடித்தளம். பூமியைத் தாயாக வணங்குவது நம் மரபு: "ஸமுத்ர வஸனே தேவி பர்வத ஸ்தன மண்டலே" என்று காலையில் எழுந்து பூமியைத் தொடும் முன் அவளிடம் மன்னிப்பு கேட்கிறோம்.
மகாபாரதத்தில் துரியோதனன் "ஊசி முனை நிலமும் தரமாட்டேன்" என்றான்; அதற்காகவே போர் நடந்தது. பூமியை வராக மூர்த்தி கடலிலிருந்து மீட்டார். அன்னிய ஆட்சியில் நிலம் பறிபோனதைப் பார்த்த பாரதி, தன் மண்ணைக் காப்பது ஒவ்வொருவரின் கடமை என்கிறார். இது தனி மனிதனின் நிலத்துக்கும் நாட்டின் நிலத்துக்கும் பொருந்தும்.
Explanation
Land is the source of food and the foundation of life. Our tradition worships the earth as Mother; on rising in the morning we ask her forgiveness before setting foot on her, 'O Goddess clothed by the ocean, whose breasts are the mountains'.
In the Mahabharata Duryodhana refused to give even as much land as the point of a needle, and the war was fought over that. Varaha raised the Earth from the ocean. Having seen land taken under foreign rule, Bharathiyar says it is everyone's duty to protect their soil. This applies to a person's land and to the nation's.
