Meaning

He who wears the athi garland and the young crescent moon, white of body, abiding in silence: Shiva. He who is dark of hue and reclines on the ocean of milk: Vishnu. He who gave the scripture to the Prophet Muhammad; the Father of Jesus. People of many faiths, through their own images, grasping it and yet not fully grasping it, praise it in many ways, but the Supreme is one.
Its nature is knowledge filled with light. Those who saw its state removed their sorrow. Praising its grace, let us attain the deathless life.

Explanation

Avvaiyar's Aathichoodi opens by praising Shiva, 'the god who wears the athi'. Bharathiyar begins with the same words, 'aathi soodi', but widens the invocation from Shiva to Vishnu and on to the one Supreme that every faith worships.
This is the Rig Veda's 'ekam sat vipra bahudha vadanti' (1.164.46): what exists is one, the wise call it by many names. 'Its nature is knowledge filled with light' is a Tamil rendering of the great saying 'prajnanam brahma', Brahman is consciousness (Aitareya Upanishad 3.3). 'Those who saw its state removed their sorrow' echoes 'tarati shokam atmavit', the knower of the Self crosses over sorrow (Chandogya Upanishad 7.1.3).
The phrase 'grasping it and yet not grasping it' is subtle. Each faith touches part of the truth, but no image can contain the whole. The Kena Upanishad (2.3) says the same: the one who says 'I know it' does not know it.
