கொடுப்பவன் வலிமையானவன்; வாங்குபவன் அல்ல. பிருஹதாரண்யக உபநிடதத்தில் பிரஜாபதி மனிதர்களுக்குச் சொன்ன "த" என்ற எழுத்தின் பொருள் "தத்த", கொடு (5.2.3). தைத்திரீய உபநிடதம் "சிரத்தையோடு கொடு; நிறைவாகக் கொடு; நாணத்தோடு கொடு" (1.11.3) என்கிறது.
திருவள்ளுவர் "ஈகை" அதிகாரத்தில் "வறியார்க்கொன் றீவதே ஈகை" (221) என்கிறார். கர்ணன், சிபி, பாரி போன்றோர் கொடையால் புகழ் பெற்றவர்கள். கொடுப்பது பலவீனம் அன்று; உள்ளத்தின் வலிமையின் அடையாளம்.
Explanation
The one who gives is strong, not the one who receives. In the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, the syllable 'da' that Prajapati taught to human beings means 'datta', give (5.2.3). The Taittiriya Upanishad says, 'Give with faith, give in plenty, give with modesty' (1.11.3).
In his chapter on giving Thiruvalluvar says true giving is giving to those in need (Kural 221). Karna, Sibi and Pari are remembered for their generosity. Giving is not weakness but a sign of inner strength.
