தமிழில் திருக்குறள், நாலடியார், ஔவையாரின் ஆத்திசூடி, கொன்றை வேந்தன், மூதுரை போன்ற நீதி நூல்கள் உண்டு; வடமொழியில் மனுநீதி, விதுர நீதி, சாணக்கிய நீதி, பஞ்சதந்திரம், ஹிதோபதேசம் உண்டு. மகாபாரதத்தின் சாந்தி பர்வத்தில் பீஷ்மர் யுதிஷ்டிரனுக்கு அரச நீதியையும் வாழ்க்கை நீதியையும் விரிவாக உபதேசித்தார்.
"பயில்" என்ற சொல் படிப்பதையும் பழகுவதையும் குறிக்கிறது. நீதிநூலைப் படித்தால் மட்டும் போதாது; அதைப் பழக்கத்தில் கொண்டுவர வேண்டும் ("கற்றது ஒழுகு").
Explanation
Tamil has books of ethics such as the Thirukkural, the Naladiyar and Avvaiyar's Aathichoodi, Kondrai Vendhan and Moodhurai; Sanskrit has the Manusmriti, the Vidura Niti, the Chanakya Niti, the Panchatantra and the Hitopadesha. In the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata Bhishma taught Yudhishthira at length the ethics of rule and of life.
The word 'payil' means both to study and to practise. It is not enough to read a book of ethics; it must become habit ('live by what you have learned').
