விளக்கம்
ஒருவன் யாரோடு சேர்கிறானோ அவர்களைப் போலவே ஆகிறான். திருவள்ளுவர் "நிலத்தியல்பால் நீர்திரிந் தற்றாகும் மாந்தர்க்கு இனத்தியல்ப தாகும் அறிவு" (குறள் 452) என்கிறார்: நிலத்தின் தன்மையால் நீர் மாறுவதுபோல் சேர்ந்த கூட்டத்தின் தன்மையால் அறிவு மாறுகிறது.
ஆதிசங்கரரின் பஜ கோவிந்தம் "ஸத்ஸங்கத்வே நிஸ்ஸங்கத்வம்": நல்லோர் சேர்க்கையால் பற்றின்மை, பற்றின்மையால் மயக்கமின்மை, அதனால் நிலைத்த உண்மை, அதனால் ஜீவன்முக்தி என்று படிப்படியாகச் சொல்கிறது. நல்ல சேர்க்கையே முக்திக்கு முதல் படி.
Explanation
One becomes like those one keeps company with. Thiruvalluvar says that as water changes with the nature of the soil, a person's understanding changes with the nature of their company (Kural 452).
Adi Shankara's Bhaja Govindam traces the steps: from good company comes detachment, from detachment freedom from delusion, from that steady truth, and from that liberation in this life. Good company is the first step to freedom.
