Explanation
In the Sangam age the 'Yavanas' were the Greek and Roman merchants who crossed the sea to trade with the Tamil country; the Akananuru sings of the fine vessels they brought. In Bharathiyar's day the word meant Europeans.
Bharathiyar does not ask us to admire their religion or their rule, but to learn from their tireless effort and their scientific curiosity. Our tradition says to accept the good from wherever it comes: 'Let noble thoughts come to us from every side' (Rig Veda 1.89.1). The Tamils themselves once crossed the seas to trade; the point is to regain that energy.
