தொன்மைக்கு அஞ்சேல்.

பொருள்
பழமைக்கு அஞ்சாதே. பழையது என்பதற்காக மட்டுமே எதையும் ஏற்கவும் வேண்டாம், அதற்குப் பயந்து அடங்கவும் வேண்டாம்.
Meaning
Do not be cowed by antiquity. Do not accept something, or submit to it, merely because it is old.

விளக்கம்
பாரதி மரபை மதித்தவர்; வேதங்களையும் உபநிடதங்களையும் கீதையையும் போற்றியவர். ஆனால் "பழையது" என்ற ஒரே காரணத்துக்காகத் தீய வழக்கங்களையும் மூடநம்பிக்கைகளையும் ஏற்பதை அவர் மறுத்தார்.
காளிதாசன் மாலவிகாக்னிமித்திரத்தில் (1.2) "புராணமித்யேவ ந ஸாது ஸர்வம்": பழையது என்பதால் மட்டும் எல்லாம் நல்லதல்ல, புதியது என்பதால் மட்டும் இழிவானதும் அல்ல; அறிஞர் ஆராய்ந்து ஏற்பர் என்கிறான். திருவள்ளுவரும் "எப்பொருள் யார்யார்வாய்க் கேட்பினும் அப்பொருள் மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பது அறிவு" (குறள் 423) என்றார்.
Explanation
Bharathiyar honoured tradition and revered the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Gita. But he refused to accept harmful customs and superstitions for the single reason that they were old.
Kalidasa says in the Malavikagnimitram (1.2), 'purana ity eva na sadhu sarvam': not everything is good just because it is old, nor bad just because it is new; the wise examine and then accept. Thiruvalluvar too said that wisdom is seeing the truth of a thing, whoever says it (Kural 423).
