பொருள்
தன்னைப் போல் மதிப்பவர்க்குத் தீங்கு செய்யாமை, கற்றவர் கூட்டத்தில் சேர்தல், பண்புடையார் போல் பேசுபவரை இறுகப் பற்றாமை, இனிய சொல் பேசுவோர்க்காக அரிய மறையை மறவாமை, சிறிதே ஆனாலும் இல்லாதவர்க்கு இடர் தீர்த்தல் — இவை நல்லன.
Meaning
Doing no harm to those who are dear as one's own eye, keeping the company of the learned, not clinging to those whose smooth speech imitates good character, not forgetting the rare Veda for the sake of sweet talkers, and ending the distress of the poor even in a small way: these are good.

Explanation
The fourth line is the distinctive one: even if it be little. Giving does not have to be large to count; a small help is still entered in the account.
Speech that mimics good character is an important warning. Good talk is not proof of good character, and a person should not be judged by words alone. This is a recurring argument in the book.
