Meaning

Let a man keep one friend who is never false to him, make truth his own, refuse whatever does not become him, never trust the words of women whose golden ornaments are like woodland kondrai blossoms, and never be drunk: then the help of other books will hardly be needed.

Explanation

The verse runs as a condition: if these are present, that is enough. A friend, truth, right conduct and restraint of the senses — with all four a man comes to know himself.

The last two lines concern desire. Not trusting here means more than disbelief; it means refusing to be swept away without sifting. Excess of attachment clouds judgement, and that is the point.

To reflect on

Good company, truth, order and restraint: with these four nothing else is needed.
