Meaning

Sweet speech, food given kindly in the right place, and the removing of hard words for everyone: to the man who does this the gods come quickly and are received as guests. O you whose teeth are soft as young shoots.

Explanation

The first three lines are about hospitality: a good word, good food, a good face. Together they make the welcome of a house.

The ending brings the gods as guests, which means hospitality is not a ritual but an act that brings the divine to your door. The teasing address about thorn-like teeth gives the verse the intimacy of a love poem.

To reflect on

The one standing at your door may be a god; word, food and face are the language of welcome.
