Unsarithanj sella vulakaalung kaalaththu / Minsoriyum vaelaay mikavirumpi - ensaritham / Kaettaarai neeyataiyae lenraan kilarmanippoon / Vaattaanai mannan mathiththu.
Nalan, of the gleaming jewels and the sword-bearing army, thought carefully and said: ‘You of the flashing spear, when your age comes and you rule the world, do not go near those who listen with love to my story.’
Nalan's boon is not for himself but for the world: that in the Kali age, Kali should not touch those who hear his story. He does not take revenge; he seeks the good of others.
This is why, in Hindu tradition, hearing the story of Nala is believed to remove the afflictions of Kali. The well-known shloka beginning ‘Karkotakasya nagasya’ recalls Nala, Damayanthi, Karkotaka and Rituparna as names that drive Kali away.
Nala asks that Kali never trouble those who hear his story. Hence the belief that hearing Nala's story removes the ills of Kali.
Great is the one who turns his own suffering into a blessing for others.
